Brave Lineage Girls Take On Camp Cristina / by Evey Sekajipo

Last Saturday, we put on our comfy clothes and tennis shoes and headed out to YMCA Camp Cristina not knowing what to expect. We came out for team building and would do whatever it took to achieve that. Rayqwan and Ashley stood before us with harnesses and helmets promising us a fun day.

We chose to leave behind concerns about our afro puffs and hair buns under those helmets and geared up before heading down to the ropes course. Those thin cables and ropes hanging up in the air looked scary, but we had already decided that we would try everything today. Girls put on brave faces, practiced breathing routines to remain calm and, most importantly, encouraged each other throughout. No one gave up. Even those who needed to be helped out after a few hiccups remained calm and leaned on the encouragement of their sisters through the ordeal. We were all proud of ourselves for making it through the ropes course. The zip line adventure was so much fun that some of us sailed through the air twice! After lunch, we got into teams and strategically planned our “war routine” as we got behind our bunkers and went all out on a few fun rounds of paintball.

It was such a great day! We are in awe of the bravery and camaraderie displayed by our teenagers. The experience of the day was more important than looking cute. The promise of deeper sisterhood took priority over fears. The trust that mentors, YMCA guides, and God would take full care of them allowed full freedom to enjoy the experience. We are sure lessons of the day will carry on through life. Our day at Camp Cristina will be one of those days forever etched in our hearts.
