A Source of Refuge For Our Girls / by Evey Sekajipo

I have been a mentor for four months, and it has been an eye-opening experience. In a world that often makes black girls feel insignificant, I meet with girls weekly to show them the exact opposite. It is definitely a challenge. They often come in talking about issues at home and at school, and sometimes it doesn’t seem like comforting words are enough to make things better. I eventually realized that this is why MA exists at all. It is to be a source of refuge for young girls who need someone to be there for them. Even when I don’t have the right words to say, I know that each of them will be able to look back on this time in their lives and remember having mentors that supported them just because. That’s what motivates me to be a mentor, knowing that being a source of love and guidance may be exactly what a young girl needs to know to become the woman God created her to be.
